Getting started
How do I get set up on Commuta?

You should have received a magic link email to commuta.cc. Click the link to log in — no password needed initially. Once logged in, connect your Strava account if you haven't already. Commuta will then start syncing your activities automatically three times a day.

We recommend also setting a password (Menu → Change password) so you can log in directly in future.

How do I get an activity counted as a commute?

Two ways, and you only need one:

Register a route (recommended) — see "How do Commuta Routes work?". Matching activities are then credited automatically, with no tagging needed.

Tag it as a commute in Strava — open the activity in Strava, tap edit, switch on the Commute toggle and save. Commuta picks it up at the next sync.

If you tag an activity in Strava, a registered route still takes precedence: a tagged ride that follows one of your routes is credited the route distance, exactly as if it had auto-matched — so tagging a ride with extra training miles on it won't earn you the extra. Tagging earns the full activity distance only for commutes that don't match a registered route — round-trips especially. So tagging is the handy fallback for anything route-matching doesn't cover.

How do I tag activities as commutes in Strava?

In the Strava app, open the activity, tap the pencil/edit icon, and turn on the Commute toggle. Save the activity. Commuta will pick this up at the next sync (09:30, 14:30, or 21:30 BST).

Tagging is just one of two ways to get an activity counted — see "How do I get an activity counted as a commute?". Tagged commutes earn Emissions, Decongestion and Bonus coins just like route-matched ones, and Health coins are earned by all qualifying activity types. If a tagged activity also matches a registered route, the route takes precedence and you're credited your route distance.

Why isn't my activity showing up?

Commuta syncs automatically at 09:30, 14:30, and 21:30 BST each day. If your activity was recorded after the last sync, it will appear at the next one.

If an activity has been missing for more than 24 hours, check:

① The activity is visible in Strava (not private or deleted)
② Commuta still has access to your Strava account — check your Strava settings under "My Apps"
③ Email rob@commuta.cc and we'll investigate.

How do Commuta Routes work?

Register your commute in the Routes tab — the easiest way is to import it from a previous Strava ride, run or walk along that route, or you can draw it on the map by hand. You can register up to 3 routes — for example home↔work, home↔station, home↔school. Commuta then checks every new activity against your routes at each sync (09:30, 14:30 and 21:30 BST).

An activity is auto-credited as a commute when it starts near one end of a registered route and finishes near the other — in either direction — and follows most of that route. Commuta allows for GPS taking a moment to lock on at the start, so a slightly-off start still matches.

You're always credited your registered route distance, never the total activity distance. So adding training laps or extra miles on the way is completely fine: a 70 km ride that includes your 10 km commute still earns commute coins for 10 km.

Auto-detection is point-to-point, so a there-and-back recorded as one activity won't be picked up — see "I rode there and back…" below.

I rode there and back as one activity — why wasn't it counted?

Auto-detection is point-to-point: it looks for an activity that starts near one end of your registered route and finishes near the other. A there-and-back recorded as a single activity starts and finishes in the same place, so it doesn't match.

Two easy fixes: stop and save at your destination, then start a fresh activity for the return leg — each leg is then auto-credited — or simply tag the round-trip as a commute in Strava, which credits the full there-and-back distance.

If you usually "resume" the same activity for the journey home, that's what merges the two legs into one — saving them separately is the trick.

C-Coins
How are C-Coins calculated?

C-Coins are the sum of seven components: Emissions (air quality and CO₂ savings), Health (calorie value), Decongestion (transport benefit), Streak bonus, Consistency bonus, Resilience (weather bonus), and Milestones.

Every component is grounded in UK government appraisal data from DfT WebTAG v2.03FC (December 2025). See the full C-Coins Explainer in the Library for detail.

What counts as a commute?

Any active-travel journey that might otherwise have been made by car or other fossil-fuelled transport — to work, school, the shops, appointments, errands and similar. It doesn't have to be to a workplace, and it can be on foot, running or cycling.

It just needs to be either matched to a registered route or tagged as a commute in Strava. Active travel only: driving, motorbike, scooter or public-transport journeys won't count — even with GPS running, Commuta screens these out by activity type and speed. Virtual and indoor activities are removed automatically too.

Why is my commute distance lower than my total activity?

For auto-detected commutes, Commuta credits your registered route distance, not the GPS distance of the whole activity. So if you ride further than your registered route — extra laps, a longer way round, a warm-up — those extra miles don't add to your commute distance. They still count towards your Health coins as activity.

It also means a Strava privacy zone hiding the start or end of your ride no longer shortens your commute figure: the registered route distance is used regardless of where the GPS track begins.

What is the weekly target?

The standard weekly target is 20 C-Coins. Reach this and you earn a free drink at One Shot Coffee (82 Parkway, London NW1). The QR code appears in the Rewards tab once you hit the target.

The first week of the trial (w/c 30 March 2026) had a pro-rated target of 14 coins, since the trial started on Wednesday 1 April — five out of seven days. All subsequent weeks use the 20-coin target.

What is the weather resilience bonus?

The resilience bonus rewards commuting in challenging conditions — rain, wind, cold. It adds up to +60% on your Health coins for that commute, based on the weather at your GPS location and start time (fetched from Open-Meteo).

There is a safety cap: ice, storms, gales, blizzards, apparent temperature below 1°C, or wind/gusts above 50 kph give zero bonus — we don't reward genuinely dangerous conditions. Always use your judgement. Your safety comes first.

Activities within a Strava privacy zone cannot receive this bonus as location data is not available.

Rewards
How do I redeem my weekly coffee reward?

Once you've hit 20 C-Coins in a week, the Rewards tab shows a QR code. Show it to the barista at One Shot Coffee, 82 Parkway, London NW1. They'll scan it on their device — the code is single-use and confirms your reward instantly.

Each code is valid until end of Friday the following week, giving you 5 extra days beyond the Sunday the earning week closes.

What are the monthly prizes?

The top three crew members by cumulative C-Coins across the full April trial win prizes. You're automatically entered — just keep commuting. Full prize details are in the Rewards tab.

Strava & your account
How does Commuta use my Strava data?

Commuta connects to Strava via their official API using the permissions you grant during setup. We pull activity data (distance, duration, sport type, speed, elevation gain, GPS route, and heart rate and power where available) to calculate your C-Coins and populate your dashboard.

We never sell your data and never use it for marketing. To run the service we use a few trusted providers, each getting only what it needs — our hosting and database provider, our email provider, our maps provider and our weather provider. You can revoke Commuta's Strava access at any time in Strava → Settings → My Apps. See the Privacy page for full details.

Can I hide myself from the crew leaderboard?

Yes. Go to Menu → My Profile and turn off "Show on crew leaderboard". You'll still earn C-Coins and be eligible for rewards — you just won't be visible to other crew members.

How do I delete my account or my data?

Email rob@commuta.cc and ask us to delete your account, or revoke Commuta's access in Strava (Settings → My Apps). Either way we delete your personal data within 30 days and confirm by email once it's done.

You can also ask for a copy of everything we hold about you — same address, and we'll send it over.

I have a question not answered here. Who do I contact?

Email Rob at rob@commuta.cc — he'll get back to you quickly. All feedback is genuinely welcome and helps shape the product.
